Free and Low-Cost Certifications Every Female Business Owner Should Know About

by Ree Nitya, Founder of Sexess and Intimology

Building a business is expensive enough. Your education shouldn't have to be.

Whether you're just starting out or scaling something established, credentials matter. They build credibility with clients, strengthen your resume, and give you practical skills you can use immediately. The good news? Some of the best certification programs available are either free or surprisingly affordable, and several are hiding in places you already have access to.

Here's where to look:

Start With Your Library Card

If you live in Spokane, your public library card is worth more than you might realize.

Spokane Public Library provides free access to several professional development platforms funded by Washington State Library and the Washington State Legislature, meaning your tax dollars are already paying for this.

Here's what's available at no cost with your library card:

  • Gale Presents: Udemy: 25,000+ on-demand video courses covering business, technology, design, and more. Multiple languages available.

  • LinkedIn Learning: Industry-recognized courses across hundreds of professional topics.

  • Pronunciator: Language learning and communication skills.

  • Learning Express: Test prep and skill-building across professional categories.

  • Microsoft Office Certification: Spokane Public Library is a Certiport Authorized Test Center. Access self-paced GMetrix courses, practice tests, and request exam vouchers and free proctoring on-demand, 24/7. Microsoft Office certifications are recognized by employers across every industry.

Before you spend a dollar on professional development — check your library first.

Low-Cost Options Worth the Investment

When free options don't cover what you need, these platforms offer significant value at a fraction of traditional education costs:

  • Skillshare: Thousands of creative and business courses taught by industry professionals. Learning paths help you build toward specific goals. Certificates included. Currently $167.88/year — less than $15 a month for unlimited access.

  • Universal Class: Over 1,000 professional development courses since 1999. $79 for the first month, $29/month thereafter, or $189 for a full year. Broad range of topics from business writing to project management to personal development.

You Can Teach Too

Here's something most people overlook: many of these platforms aren't just for learning. They're also for teaching.

Skillshare and similar platforms allow you to create and publish your own courses. If you have expertise in your field (and as a business owner you absolutely do) you can turn your knowledge into content, build your reputation as an educator, and earn passive income at the same time.

Teaching on a platform does three things simultaneously:

  • Adds "educator" or "instructor" to your credentials

  • Builds your authority in your field

  • Generates income while you sleep

You don't need a teaching degree. You need expertise, a camera, and something worth teaching. If you've built skills that other people need consider sharing them. The same platforms giving you affordable education are waiting for someone exactly like you.

You Don't Have to Do It Alone

If time is tight or studying was never your strong suit, you don't have to figure it out solo.

Partnering with other professionals for study groups makes the process faster, more accountable, and more enjoyable. Find someone in your network working toward a similar certification and commit to learning together.

And don't forget: your library has more than just courses. Study aids, research tools, and learning support resources are all available free with your library card. The same place giving you access to 25,000 courses is also equipped to help you actually get through them.

You have a whole community available to you. Use it.
